For vegan food in Newcastle, the one fully vegan place to start is Snackwallah in the Grainger Market, where everything is plant based and the curry of the day with daal, rice and naan is £7. Beyond that, the best meat-free eating is at vegan-friendly restaurants: Dosa Kitchen in Jesmond, where many South Indian dishes are naturally vegan, Sachins on Forth Banks with its Punjabi vegan dishes, and Cantina in Heaton for Mexican. We have been clear below about which places are fully vegan and which simply cook well for vegans, and checked each one in October 2026.

Fully vegan

Snackwallah, Grainger Market

Snackwallah is at Units 31 to 33, Alley One in the Grainger Market (NE1 5QG), and its line is simple: all vegan, all fresh, all authentic Indian street food. The curry of the day with daal, rice and naan is £7, the Mumbai sandwich is £6, and the bhel puri, which the Hairy Bikers said was like eating sunshine, is £5. Add pani puri for £4, a samosa chaat for £6 and a masala chai for £2. It is family run, a living wage employer and uses compostable tableware. Opening is 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday, with food from 11.30am. It is closed on Sunday.

Vegan-friendly restaurants

Dosa Kitchen, Jesmond

Dosa Kitchen at 7a Osborne Road, Jesmond (NE2 2AE), entered from Holly Avenue West, is a family run South Indian restaurant that appeared in the Good Food Guide in 2024 and 2025. South Indian cooking suits vegans, and the restaurant says many of its dishes, from crisp dosas to sambar, are naturally vegan or gluten free. Ask the staff to point them out. Dinner is from 5pm Tuesday to Sunday, with lunch on Saturday and Sunday; it is closed on Monday.

Sachins, Forth Banks

Sachins on Forth Banks (NE1 3SG) has cooked Punjabi food for more than 40 years and lists vegan dishes on its menu, including Kabli Channa and Sachins Daal, which has been on the menu throughout. Every vegetarian main can also be ordered as a side, so a table of vegans can build a proper spread. It is open for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Pho, Grainger Street

Pho at 139 to 141 Grainger Street (NE1 5AE) is a Vietnamese street food chain with its menu marked with vegetarian and vegan icons; the spring rolls come in a veggie version. Use its allergen guide to check before ordering. It opens from 11.30am daily, until 9pm Sunday to Thursday and 10pm on Friday and Saturday, which makes it a reliable vegan-friendly option in the city centre late into the evening.

Cantina, Heaton

Cantina, the contemporary Mexican restaurant that opened new premises on Heaton Park Road in May, describes its food as vegan friendly, from tacos to totopos, with inventive cocktails in a relaxed room. It is the pick for a vegan night out in Heaton.

Chakh Dhoom, Jesmond

Chakh Dhoom at 127 Osborne Road (NE2 2TB) is an Indian street food restaurant that won ARTA's Street Food Restaurant of the Year. Its vegetable Manchurian is the meat-free dish to order; check which dishes are vegan when you book.

Kiln, Ouseburn

Kiln at 4 Hume Street, Byker serves a vegan sausage sandwich for £6 at breakfast, from 10am, and its evening small plates lean heavily on vegetables and dips such as hummus and baba ghanoush. Ask which are vegan on the night.

Vegan afternoon tea

Jesmond Dene House offers a vegan version of its afternoon tea, which starts from £32 and is served Wednesday to Sunday, 1pm to 4pm, as long as you give 48 hours' notice. Pleased To Meet You on High Bridge has also offered vegan afternoon tea options, though not gluten free ones, so confirm when you book.

Good to know

Snackwallah is the only fully vegan place on this list, and it is a daytime market stall, so plan it for lunch. For dinner, Dosa Kitchen, Sachins and Cantina are the strongest choices, but remember Sachins is closed on Sunday and Dosa Kitchen on Monday. Menus change, so always tell staff you are vegan rather than relying on the vegetarian label. For more ideas, see our restaurants page.
