Dog Friendly Pubs in Newcastle: 8 Locals Where Your Dog Is Welcome
Eight Newcastle pubs where dogs are welcome, from the Ouseburn loop to a Quayside pie house, each checked against its current CAMRA listing.
The best dog friendly pubs in Newcastle cluster in the Ouseburn Valley, where the Cumberland Arms, Free Trade Inn, Tyne Bar and Ship Inn all welcome dogs and sit within a 15 minute walk of each other. In the city centre, the Town Mouse on St Mary's Place and the Redhouse on the Quayside also allow dogs, and further out the Brandling Villa in South Gosforth and the Two by Two Brewery Tap in Byker are easy Metro hops. Every pub below is listed as dog friendly on its current CAMRA WhatPub entry, checked in October 2026, rather than taken from old press round-ups.
Policies can change with the season or with a busy match day, so if you are bringing a big dog or a group, ring ahead. For more places to drink, see our bars guide.
Cumberland Arms, Ouseburn
The Cumberland Arms is on James Place Street, off Byker Bank, a three-storey pub rebuilt in 1898 to 1899 that looks down over the lower Ouseburn Valley. CAMRA lists it as dog friendly with a garden, and live music runs almost daily, much of it traditional dance and folk. It is a serious cider pub, a multiple winner of CAMRA's regional cider award, with up to eight ciders or perries alongside five changing cask beers. Winter and summer beer festivals happen every year. Opening is 2pm Monday to Thursday and noon Friday to Sunday, so plan a weekday dog walk for the afternoon.
Free Trade Inn, St Lawrence Road
A few minutes east along the river, the Free Trade Inn is the pub people take visitors to for the view. The beer garden looks across the Tyne bridges and both quaysides, and dogs are welcome inside and out. The bar runs around seven cask beers, mostly changing, with extra ciders kept in the cellar. Food is simple: sandwiches from a local deli. It opens 11am to 11pm every day, which makes it the most reliable stop on a weekday morning walk along the river.
Tyne Bar, Maling Street
The Tyne Bar sits where the Ouseburn meets the Tyne, between the Quayside and Spillers Wharf, with picnic tables opposite and a heated patio. It is dog friendly and has a garden listed on CAMRA. There are always at least three Wylam beers on, sometimes many more, and live music every Sunday that costs nothing to watch. Food is a step up from most pub kitchens here, and it is a natural end point if you have walked the Quayside from the city with the dog.
Ship Inn, Stepney Bank
Up the hill on the west side of the valley, the Ship Inn on Stepney Bank is a traditional local on the Ouseburn trail with a garden and a dog friendly listing. Look for the stained glass at the back advertising George Younger's Alloa Ales. The whisky shelf runs to 27 malts, Wednesday is tapas night and Thursday brings two fish and chips for £10. It is a good first stop before working down the valley to the Cluny and the Tyne Bar.
Town Mouse Ale House, St Mary's Place
In the city centre, the Town Mouse is a basement micropub at 11 St Mary's Place, about 150 metres from Haymarket Metro. It holds around 50 people, so a calm dog fits better than a boisterous one. Six changing cask beers go up on a big blackboard with keg alongside. Hours are 2pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday, later on Friday and Saturday, and 2pm to 9pm on Sunday. CAMRA warns it fills up when Newcastle United are at home, so avoid match days with a dog.
Redhouse, Sandhill
The Redhouse at 32 Sandhill is a 17th century Grade II listed building on the Quayside, now a pie, mash and ale house that also takes in the old Bob Trollops pub. Dogs are welcome, and the pies, peas and mash make it one of the few places on the Quayside where you can eat a proper meal with the dog at your feet. Two bars, stone walls and low beams, with local beers and a long bottle list.
Brandling Villa, South Gosforth
Five minutes from South Gosforth Metro on Haddricks Mill Road, the Brandling Villa is a large double-fronted pub with a garden and a dog friendly listing. Ten beers rotate on handpump, served in thirds or two-thirds rather than halves, and Overkill Brewing works out of the cellar. It is handy after a walk in Jesmond Dene or along the Ouseburn path north of the city.
Two by Two Brewery Tap, Byker
The Two by Two Brewery Tap is at Unit 8, Morley's Yard, about 460 metres from Byker Metro. Dogs are welcome and the tap runs monthly dog socials. It pours two cask beers from the brewery plus eight keg lines, with gluten free and alcohol free options in the fridge. It opens Thursday from 5pm, Friday from 3pm, Saturday from noon and Sunday from 2pm, and is closed Monday to Wednesday. Check the CAMRA listing for current hours before you go.
Good to know
The four Ouseburn pubs make an easy loop: start at the Ship on Stepney Bank, drop down to the Cumberland Arms, cross to the Free Trade and finish at the Tyne Bar by the river. Manors Metro is the closest station to the valley. Bring water for the dog in summer, keep them on a lead in small rooms like the Town Mouse, and check CAMRA's WhatPub entries, which flag dog friendly status and opening hours, before setting out. Gigs and festivals at these pubs are on our What's On page.
