The main live music venues in Newcastle, from biggest to smallest, are the Utilita Arena on Arena Way, the O2 City Hall, NX Newcastle on Westgate Road, The Glasshouse across the river on Gateshead Quays, the Boiler Shop on South Street, and then the Ouseburn rooms: The Cluny and Cluny 2 on Lime Street, Cobalt Studios on Boyd Street and the upstairs and back bar at the Cumberland Arms. For free gigs, the Tyne Bar puts bands on in its beer garden most Sundays. Below is what each room is like and what was on their own listings in autumn 2026, so you can pick the right size of night.

Utilita Arena Newcastle, Arena Way

The city's biggest indoor venue, at Arena Way by the river west of Central Station. This is where the arena tours stop. Its autumn 2026 calendar takes in the Mercury Prize on 22 October, The Strokes on 25 October with Fat White Family, Paul Heaton with the Lightning Seeds on 29 October, Korn on 30 October and The Script on 5 November, then Disney On Ice from 11 to 15 November and Bill Bailey on 5 December. Full listings are on the Utilita Arena website.

O2 City Hall Newcastle

The O2 City Hall is the old-school concert hall in the city centre, the place for heritage acts, comedians and tribute nights. October 2026 is typical: Dexys on the 21st, Soul II Soul on the 23rd, The Proclaimers on the 25th and The Illegal Eagles on the 28th, with Razorlight's America 20th anniversary tour on 27 November. Tickets are sold through Academy Music Group.

NX Newcastle, Westgate Road

NX Newcastle is a former Majestic cine-picture house on Westgate Road, recently refurbished, and a short walk from Central Station. It is the standing room for touring bands and club nights that have outgrown the Ouseburn. Bring photo ID: the venue runs a strict no ID, no entry policy and accepts a driving licence, passport or PASS card. There is a cloakroom, and professional cameras are not allowed.

The Glasshouse, Gateshead Quays

The Glasshouse International Centre for Music at St Mary's Square on Gateshead Quays is home to the Royal Northern Sinfonia, with Sage One as its main hall. It is the best-sounding room in the area and covers far more than classical: Steve Hackett played Genesis there in October, the same week as the Sinfonia's Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Walk over the Millennium Bridge from the Quayside. See the Glasshouse listings.

Boiler Shop, South Street

Boiler Shop at 20 South Street, behind Central Station, is a mid-size venue that sells out fast. Almost every autumn 2026 date on its listings was gone by late October, including The Wedding Present on 23 October, The Skids and Theatre of Hate on 6 November, Teenage Fanclub on 10 November and The Orb with Ozric Tentacles on 12 November. If you want a Boiler Shop gig, buy when it is announced.

The Cluny, Lime Street

The Cluny at 36 Lime Street is the Ouseburn's main gig venue, with two rooms: The Cluny and the smaller Cluny 2. Gigs run on most nights, with up and coming touring bands like Death Valley Girls on 26 October and local acts in Cluny 2 through the week. The bar serves food too, so you can eat before the doors open. It is the easiest place in the city to take a chance on a band you have never heard of.

Cobalt Studios, Boyd Street

Cobalt Studios on Boyd Street in Shieldfield is a community-run arts venue doing live music, club nights and Learn and Do workshops. Its Fresh Thursday gigs start at 7pm and cost £8 to £15, and weekend shows and club nights generally run £8 to £16. Expect left-field bookings: experimental, folk, global and dance music. Check the Cobalt Studios listings.

Cumberland Arms, Ouseburn

For the smallest rooms, the Cumberland Arms on James Place Street hosts ticketed gigs, comedy and improv upstairs and free sessions in the Back Bar. There is an Irish session every Wednesday and every Friday at 8pm, old-time music on the second and fourth Thursdays, a ballad club on the first Sunday afternoon and jam sessions on the first and third Sundays. Bring an instrument if you play.

Tyne Bar, Maling Street

The Tyne Bar is devoted to free live music. Local bands play a stage in the beer garden beneath the bridge, usually on Sunday afternoons from 4pm, and food is served daily from noon to 9pm.

Good to know

The arena, City Hall and NX draw touring acts; the Cluny, Cobalt and the Cumberland are where you will hear local bands. The Ouseburn venues are walkable from each other, with Manors the nearest Metro, and Boiler Shop, NX and the arena are all within walking distance of Central Station. Many big shows sell out on announcement, so join the mailing lists. For tonight's gigs see our What's On listings, and for where to drink before and after see bars and nightlife.
