The best Heaton restaurants are on two parallel streets. Heaton Park Road has Rebel, Heaton's Michelin Guide restaurant, plus the newer Cantina and Mortal Wombat; Heaton Road has Boquerones for tapas, the Butterfly Cabinet for all-day breakfast and Ten 10 for small plates. Chillingham Road, a few minutes east, adds Stupid Good Pizza and the Mokka Bakery. Every place below was confirmed trading in October 2026 on its own site or a dated 2026 listing. Several older Heaton round-ups still recommend places that have since closed, so if a list sends you elsewhere, check first. More across the city on our restaurants page.

Rebel, Heaton Park Road

At 150 Heaton Park Road, Rebel is the one to book. The Michelin Guide describes an intimate, personally run room named after the owner's childhood dog, with a narrow, quirky layout, family artwork and rustic wooden tables. The kitchen serves a seasonal modern British set menu in two lengths, often using overlooked ingredients (the Guide mentions a venison faggot with tender loin), and the wine list includes organic and biodynamic bottles, with pairings recommended. It opens Wednesday to Saturday, from 6pm on Wednesday and from 1pm Thursday to Saturday, in the £££ band. Book through Rebel's website.

Boquerones, Heaton Road

At 194a Heaton Road, Boquerones bills itself as the first and only Spanish restaurant in Heaton. The tapas run from croquetas, patatas bravas and tortilla to Manchego, Serrano ham and Padrón peppers, with sangria in three styles, a Spanish wine list and cocktails. The 3 tapas for £19.95 offer is the way in. The kitchen opens 5pm to 9pm Tuesday to Thursday, from 4.30pm on Friday and from noon on Saturday, with the bar open until 10.30pm. It is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so check the Boquerones site before planning a weekend.

Butterfly Cabinet, Heaton Road

A few doors along at 200 Heaton Road, the Butterfly Cabinet is Heaton's daytime cafe. Breakfast is served all day, every day, and lunch starts at 11am. It opens 9am to 4pm on weekdays (last hot food at 3pm), 9am to 5pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. There are no reservations: you are shown to a table on arrival.

Ten 10 Heaton, Heaton Road

Opened in February 2026 on Heaton Road, Ten 10 does small plates, coffee and cocktails, with Scotch eggs and steak with smashed avocado among the dishes. It is dog friendly, which counts for a lot on a street this close to Heaton Park.

Cantina, Heaton Park Road

Cantina moved to Heaton Park Road in May 2026 after an eight-month pop-up at Zerox on the Quayside. It cooks contemporary Mexican food, with vegan-friendly tacos and totopos, a brunch menu and cocktails. Order the barbecued tenderstem with mole poblano, pepitas and macha.

Mortal Wombat, Heaton Park Road

On the same street, Mortal Wombat replaced RO in July 2026 and is the place for a drink after dinner: cocktails, wine, beer and board games from Wednesday to Sunday, plus DJ nights, wine tastings and food pop-ups.

237 East

From the team behind the Scranners Arms, 237 East opened in Heaton in May 2026 as a neighbourhood diner, with beef burgers and £5 bacon sandwiches, Tynemouth Coffee, live DJs and a drag brunch.

Chillingham Road: Stupid Good Pizza and the Mokka Bakery

Stupid Good Pizza arrived on Chillingham Road in July 2026 from Hartlepool and Stockton, making New York style pies. There are no walk-ins, so pre-order; the spicy vodka chicken parm with pepperoni is the one people talk about. For mornings, the Mokka Bakery on the same road serves a Turkish menu: breakfast for two with feta, halloumi, clotted cream and honey, plus potato boreks, mini pastrami pizzas, baklava and Turkish coffee with a cookie.

Good to know

Heaton is quietest on Sundays and Mondays: Boquerones and Rebel are both shut on those days, so the Butterfly Cabinet is the reliable Sunday daytime option. Rebel and Boquerones both take bookings; the Butterfly Cabinet does not, and Stupid Good Pizza is pre-order only. Chillingham Road Metro is the nearest stop for Chillingham Road, and Heaton Road is a short walk from there. For drinks nearby, see our bars page. The Luxe openings round-up tracks new arrivals.
