The Best Independent Coffee Shops in Newcastle
Who roasts what in Newcastle and where to drink it, from Pink Lane Coffee by the station to Pumphreys in the Grainger Market.
The best independent coffee shops in Newcastle are run by people who roast their own: Pink Lane Coffee opposite Central Station roasts in batches in the city, Ouseburn Coffee Co pours its own beans at Harvest in Jesmond and in Fenwick Food Hall, and Pumphreys has been roasting since 1750 and still trades in the Grainger Market. Add Lagom on Monk Street, Laneway on High Bridge and Tiny Tiny on Carliol Square and you have a full day of good cups within walking distance. Addresses and hours below were checked in October 2026, and this list is Newcastle upon Tyne only, not the Australian one.
Pink Lane Coffee, by Central Station
Pink Lane Coffee sits just across from Central Station on Pink Lane, which makes it the obvious first coffee off a train. Pink Lane roasts in small batches at its own Newcastle roastery and aims for sweetness over bitterness. The beans are single origin, ethically sourced and speciality grade, scoring at least 80 points. It is open seven days, has oat and soya milk and gluten free options, and dogs are welcome. There is a full cafe menu if you want to eat.
Ouseburn Coffee Co: Harvest, Fenwick and the roastery
Ouseburn Coffee Co roasts in the Ouseburn, and you can drink its coffee in three places. Harvest, its flagship coffee house at 91 St George's Terrace, Jesmond (NE2 2DN), is open 8am to 4pm every day and serves food, coffee and bags of beans. In town there is a concession stand inside Fenwick Food Hall at 39 Northumberland Street, open 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30am to 5pm on Sunday. At weekends a coffee cart trades at Tynemouth Market in Tynemouth Station. The roastery itself is on Albion Row in the Ouseburn (NE6 1LQ). Ouseburn Coffee Co says the refurbished roastery is due to open to the public on Saturday mornings, 9am to 1pm, selling roasts by the bag and the cup; otherwise visits are by appointment, so check before you walk down.
Pumphreys, Grainger Market
Pumphreys has been roasting coffee since 1750, and it still uses traditional open flame roasting drums that are more than 80 years old. Its stall in the Grainger Market is the natural coffee stop while you shop the market, run by a roaster with more than 270 years behind it. The firm also has a warehouse, training room and coffee shop in Blaydon.
Lagom, Monk Street
Lagom is on Monk Street in the city centre, down a back lane that is easy to walk past. It was named best coffee shop in Newcastle for 2025, it is open daily, and it rotates four global coffees at a time, with beans from the Americas and Africa. It is dog friendly and a few minutes' walk from the Grainger Market.
Laneway, High Bridge
Laneway is at 17 to 21 High Bridge (NE1 1EW), between Grey Street and the Bigg Market, with a sister cafe at 69a Front Street in Tynemouth. Both are open seven days a week for speciality coffee and brunch. The Newcastle room feels more like a bar than a cafe, with high stools at the window, which makes it a good place to sit with a laptop for an hour. Dogs are welcome.
Tiny Tiny, Carliol Square
Tiny Tiny on Carliol Square is a plant filled, industrial style coffee bar near Manors and Monument. It is known for its latte art, and you can stop in just for a drink, though it also runs a seasonal food menu. It is handy for anyone working on the east side of the centre.
Olive & Bean, Clayton Street
Olive & Bean at 17 to 19 Clayton Street (NE1 5PN) is an all day independent cafe that opens at 8am Monday to Saturday and 8.30am on Sunday, closing at 6pm (5.30pm on Sunday). Everything is baked and prepared in house, it is walk-in only, and it makes custom cakes to order. It is the pick here if you want coffee with a proper slice of cake rather than a single origin flight.
Good to know
Most of these are a short walk from Monument Metro, apart from Pink Lane Coffee, which is opposite Central Station, and Harvest, which is in Jesmond near West Jesmond Metro. The independents often close in the late afternoon, so plan coffee before 4pm. Pink Lane, Ouseburn Coffee Co and Pumphreys all roast their own, and Harvest sells Ouseburn's beans by the bag.
