The best Indian restaurant in Newcastle depends on what you want. For regional home-style cooking, Dabbawal on High Bridge and in Jesmond is the one locals send visitors to; for Punjabi classics, Sachins on Forth Banks has been cooking for more than 40 years; for South Indian dosas, Dosa Kitchen on Osborne Road; and for a special occasion, Raval in the old Snowball and Son department store at the Gateshead end of the Tyne Bridge. Below they are sorted by style, with addresses and hours checked in October 2026.

Home-style and street food

Dabbawal, High Bridge and Jesmond

Dabbawal has two restaurants: 69 to 75 High Bridge (NE1 6BX), just off Grey Street, and 1 Brentwood Mews in Jesmond (NE2 3DG). Dabbawal cooks regional home-style Indian food: North Indian chaats, charcoal kebabs, southern seafood dishes and sharing plates, with naan from the tandoor. The Sunday Times singled out the railway lamb curry and saffron pulao, and that is the order. If you cannot choose, the Chef's Special at £26.95 brings appetisers, street classics, grills, curries, sides and breads.

Dakwala, Grainger Street

Dakwala at 42 to 44 Grainger Street (NE1 5JG) is a Bombay-style canteen and bar known for its butter chicken. The Sunday Feast is £19.95, and the bottomless brunch is £39.95 a head for 90 minutes, Thursday to Sunday between 12.30pm and 4.30pm.

Chit 'n' Chaat, Eldon Square

In the old Tapas Revolution unit in Eldon Square, Chit 'n' Chaat serves dosas, chaats and Gobi Manchurian at affordable prices, an easy Indian lunch if you are shopping.

Chakh Dhoom and Chowrasta

Chakh Dhoom at 127 Osborne Road, Jesmond (NE2 2TB) won the ARTA award for Street Food Restaurant of the Year. Order the vegetable Manchurian and paneer lababdar masala. In Gosforth, Chowrasta on the High Street gives street food a fusion twist: keema nachos, puri chaat bites and fish koliwada.

Punjabi and North Indian

Sachins, Forth Banks

Sachins on Forth Banks (NE1 3SG), a short walk from Central Station, calls itself Newcastle's favourite Punjabi restaurant and has been open for more than 40 years; Bob Arora has owned it since 2000. Sachins Daal has been on the menu throughout, and the Gunpowder Chicken starter and Murgh Malabar are the dishes to add. It serves lunch from noon to 1.30pm and dinner from 5pm, until 9.30pm Monday to Wednesday and 10pm Thursday to Saturday. It is closed on Sunday.

Khai Khai, Queen Street

Khai Khai at 29 Queen Street on the Quayside (NE1 3UG) is best known for two dishes: its Black House Daal and a broccoli dish that went viral. Gordon Ramsay visited in 2022.

Simla, Side

Simla at 39 Side (NE1 3JE) opened in 1981, which makes it one of the city's longest running Indian restaurants. It was refurbished in 2016, and the lamb rogan josh is the signature.

South Indian

Dosa Kitchen, Jesmond

Dosa Kitchen is a family run South Indian restaurant at 7a Osborne Road, Jesmond (NE2 2AE), with the entrance on Holly Avenue West. It appeared in the Good Food Guide in 2024 and 2025. Go for the masala dosa, sambar and the South Indian grill, Sutta Kari, meat marinated in spices and charred over an open flame; on Sunday there is the Sapaad feast. Many dishes are naturally vegan or gluten free. Dinner runs from 5pm Tuesday to Sunday, and lunch on Saturday from noon to 3pm and Sunday from noon to 5pm. It is closed on Monday.

Fine dining

Raval, Gateshead Quays

Raval Indian Brasserie and Bar is on Church Street at the Gateshead end of the Tyne Bridge, in the Snowball and Son building, once a luxury department store known as the Harrods of the North. The cooking is modern Indian drawn from regional and coastal dishes, cooked over fire with seasonal British produce, served in a lounge bar and a main dining room. It has been named a National Champion by the British Indian Good Food Guide. It opens Monday to Saturday from 5pm to 10.30pm, and there is a Chef's Tasting Experience for a big night. Try the Nilgiri chicken saag or the biryani.

Good to know

Sachins is closed on Sunday and Dosa Kitchen on Monday, and Raval only opens in the evening. Book at weekends, especially for Dosa Kitchen, which is a cosy room. Osborne Road is a short walk from West Jesmond or Jesmond Metro, and Forth Banks is downhill from Central Station. For other cuisines, see our restaurants page.
