Neapolitan
Rudy's, Grey Street
Rudy's is at 27 to 31 Grey Street, two minutes from Monument Metro. The dough is made fresh every day and fermented for at least 24 hours, and the pizzas are topped with San Marzano tomatoes and fior di latte mozzarella, with other ingredients from Italy and the UK. It opens at 11.45am every day and closes at 10pm Monday to Saturday and 9pm on Sunday, so it works for a quick lunch as well as dinner. A margherita is the test of any Neapolitan place, and this is where to take it.
Ai Fiori, Jesmond
Ai Fiori at 133 Sandyford Road, Jesmond (NE2 1QR) bakes Neapolitan pizzas in a wood fired oven and also serves fresh pasta and mains, plus a Sunday lunch menu. It takes table bookings, which makes it a better choice than the walk-in places for a group or a family meal. Call 0191 380 2720 to book.
Sanco, Forth Banks
Sanco, at The Forge on Forth Banks near Central Station, serves wood fired Neapolitan pizza with margaritas and martinis, and its rule is no menu, no limits, just pizza. Adults pay £21 and children £10.50, and the pizzas keep coming until you stop them. Go hungry.
